Sleep and an Ethernet connection

Thanks for your reply Niles.

If I attempt to start network manager then I'm informed that it's 
already running. The same thing happens after waking from sleep. As I 
say the "active connections" box is completely blank, including the 
words "active connections", after waking.

Should I be using nmcli to reconnect after waking, if so how?
