ubuntu 14.04 runing slow

We need more information. Is there anything of note in
~/.xsession-errors and the relevant logs in /var/log? Of interest would
be (at least) syslog, boot.log and Xorg.0.log, possibly kern.log too.
What are you running when the system begins to slow down, and how do
you notice the slowdown?

Also, when the system starts to run slow, is it heavily loaded?
"uptime" will tell you the load average, as will "top", which will also
give you an idea of any runaway processes.

Did you shut down properly before the system took a long time to boot?
If you didn't, then it was probably because of "fsck" checking the file
systems.

I am running an AMD quad core 3.5GHz with 16G RAM myself, for a loooong
time it was running 14.04, but now it's on vivid. Runs like a stabbed
rat for what I use it for :)
