What may be happening, and it happens here with me: When the boot 
process gets to the auto-login-display-after-5-seconds, if you hit the 
<RETURN> key you can, of course, login that much quicker.  HOWEVER, if I 
hit the numeric keypad <ENTER> key, I am informed that the password if 
wrong and I will have to enter my password properly to go any further.

It seems to be an undocumented feature of Ubuntu....
