Had to get some work done so I booted to 12.04. While I was there I 
looked at /etc/X11/ (I have no X.11). I don't have a xorg.conf but I do 
have a xorg.conf.failsafe and a xorg.conf-backup-160409091258 both of 
which were modified during the time frame I was trying to recover from 
my problems.
