Do you think you have rooted? Or do you think you have MS-Winodws malware
lurking in your mail spool?

You probably want to first get chkrootkit and use that program to check to see
if you server(s) have been rooted -- this program checks to see if various
system programs have been altered and whether or not there are 'extra'
processes or daemons running, etc.
If this was a RedHat flavored system, I'd also suggest using the 'rpm -Va'
command to check for alterations of installed software -- is there something
like this with apt-get or dpkg (verifying installed software files against
expected sizes or stored checksums)?
There is something call clamav, which along with mimedefang can be included
with your mail processing to check for malware attached to e-mail messages,
but this is mostly checking for MS-Winodws malware, not Linux malware (I am
not sure if there is any such thing out in the wild -- rootkits are a
*different* story)
