Which I just tried to do, but when I boot the ISO file it goes through a
couple of stages then collapses into a letterbox shaped screen filled
with multicoloured random gibberish.

Is it worth my while, I wonder, to download the "normal" Ubuntu
distribution and see if it can install the MATE desktop?
