Now sorted, via a tip I found with a combination of Google keywords I
can't now remember so I can't find again. Sorry.
The trick is not to install directly from CD or mounted ISO, but to
copy the entire CD to your local hard disk first and then install from
there. This worked fine. Crossover also has an option to install
Office 2003 SP3 directly, which worked fine, and also to install the
Office 2007 File Format Filters, which also worked.
So now I have Word 2003 running smoothly on 64-bit Ubuntu 16.04. :-)
