This is completely wrong, and an unhelpful attitude to take. It's a Ubuntu
problem. Packages that were in 16.04 were not in 16.10. A program that was
free could fail to work too, for the same reasons.

In the event, thanks to Volker pointing me in the right direction, I have
located the correct packages for 16.10 on Launchpad. The question is why
weren't they included in the upgrade? Presumably it was an oversight.
