Nautilus closes instead of minimizing?

I might try that, and, yes, it really IS in an unhealthy state.

Hmmm.. that does make it worse. Might be unusual enough that it is not
worth extensive analysis/fixing.

That's a big job, and similar to what I've done after the KDE desktop
disaster - but not with close assessment to check for induced problems
after each change. I've been finding other pgms and/or workarounds,
and may just settle for that solution.
No need to be sorry - you were patient enough to go through some ideas
that might have fixed it, and I really appreciate your help.
