well, this is the kind of "planned obsolescence" that all graphics card
vendors do. if the feature is completely gone from the driver there is
no easy way to get it back (in a few iterations the xorg.conf trick
might simply not work anymore because the fallback code is gone) 

this is less a bug in code or the driver than a bug in the thinking of
hardware manufacturers ... amd and nvidia do something similar with
their drivers and old cards ...
