Petter is seemingly right :).

I'm running openbox, don't have GVFS installed, but if I run
xfce4-settings-manager and take a look at "Removable Drive and Media"
there are definitively settings related to your issue.

Take a look at the tab "Storage", there likely is an option "Mount
removeable drives when hot-plugged". I suspect you need to check it.
