I'm not sure Thunderbird has native Maildir support.
A popular setup is having Fetchmail collect the mail, optionally
filtering it with SpamAssassin, storing it in Maildir format (using
Procmail or Maildrop), then running Dovecot as an IMAP server on the
local machine for Thunderbird (or another email app) to communicate
with.
