ssh wants passphrase and password if accessed via remote VPN login

But is it "the same box"? The Windows VM is a different "box" as far as
ssh is concerned. It's not clear from your description whether you
ALWAYS log in using the Windows VM. If you do, then it is indeed a bit
of a mystery. If you don't then the reason is clear - you will have to
add your puTTY public key to authorized_keys on the CentOS box.
