SORRY! It's 16.04, not 16.10: networking disabled on laptop running ubuntu 16.10

SORRY! Really! My typing mistake!!!

This is the very same laptop on which I installed 16.04 LTS, not 16.10
at the end of June, thanks to your help:

good point. I had not thought of that. As soon as I can I will try it
too, but of course other ideas are welcome, to learn more if nothing
else.

the dropdown menu has, from top to bottom:


- no network devices available GREYED OUT
- VPN Connections -> Configure VPN...
                      Disconnect VPN
- Enable Networking is ticked
- Connection Information GREYED OUT
- Edit Connections...

when clicking on Edit COnnections it only lists the wifi networks I used 
from July to September

Adding there an ethernet connection with device eth0, just to see what 
happens, has no effect
even after reboot
