Is there some other way of accessing these in the app?

Some apps that don't have menu bars _do_ have Unity global menus.
Perhaps the most widely-used example is Google Chrome.

This parallels Mac OS X: e.g. I won't use MS Office for Windows 2007
or newer because of the ribbon. But Mac Office has a ribbon _and_
menus, so for me remains totally usable.
