I can't say anything to pulseaudio, I never ever would install it,
since it doesn't fit to my needs.

However, if you are using plain ALSA your script could only work after
the required snd module is loaded and the audio device is initialised.
If you are using a sound server, then the sound server must be started
after the snd module is loaded and the audio device is initialised and
before you run your script.
