I'm almost there.
The only remaining issue is that I cannot control the running
pulseaudio. Any attempt to use pacmd or pactl results in one or more
of:
Failed to create secure directory (/var/run/pulse): Permission denied
No PulseAudio daemon running, or not running as session daemon.
Ive tried 'export PULSE_RUNTIME_PATH="/var/run/pulse"'; if I do that
and run pacmd as root (sudo -E pacmd) I don't get the first message,
but I still get the second. I've added root and my own username to the
pulse and pulse-access groups. I've added auth-anonymous=1 to
the module-native-protocol-unix module. I've loaded the module module-
cli-protocol-unix. Adding "set-sink-volume 0 60000" to the end of
/etc/pulse/system.pa" had no apparent effect.
All the stuff I can find in Google seems to expect that there will be a
process running called pulseaudio, but there is no such process on my
system. Note that the system *is* playing sound though. Everything
seems to be working fine, I just can't change the volume, which is all
I really need to do.
BTW I am absolutely NOT wedded to pulseaudio, but I *am* wedded to
doing as little work as possible :-)
Regards, K.
