well, or a proper soundcard ... you actually do not need a sound server
 at all if your card has proper dmix support and your alsa driver is
set up for it ...

the need for sound servers stems from the fact that many mainboards
simply have the cheapest onboard cards which do not support dmix in
hardware ...
