Generally speaking, yes.
Now: when I have sound problems, I find it really easy to:
* leave alsa installed (of course)
* leave pulseaudio installed, and NEVER try to change its configuration: just leave it as is
* install and configure jackd with alsa + loops + pulseaudio bridging.
As a consequence: apps prefering pulseaudio continue to use pulseaudio thanks to jack's bridging capabilities, without even knowing what's happening in the background.
You don't have to try to make pulse working without a session (or other particular needs). You just need jackd, alsa and pulseaudio to be up and running and everything will do so.
