Problems with headless system

Could be lots of things. I don't have any direct ideas.
I'd check that vital filesystems (/, /var etc.) weren't full.
If they were not, I'd reboot it and perhaps do an fsck -f on root and
any others.
If it were mine, I'd probably connect a screen & keyboard & do this
locally with a bootable USB key or something.
But this is just general troubleshooting when I don't really know, TBH.
