When the Ubuntu Installer gets to the point partitioning the disk(s), you can
select manual or manual guided. Select one of those options. You will be given
a selection of devices and/or partitions to chose from. Just select the
partition (or space to be turned into a partition) you want for the /home file
system, including what to format it as (ext4 probably) a mount point (/home).
Then go on to select someplace for the root file system and so on. The
installer will update the partition tables where apropriate. If the partition
is already there, it will only need to format it (eg run mkfs.ext4)
Is the SSD an *external* drive or an internal drive? Most laptops *I* have
ever used (including the Lenovo R500 I have now) only support a single drive
internally. In my case, I have never had a use for MS-Windows and I have a
SATA SSD in this machine with only CentOS 6 on it (it has two partitions: a
/boot file system (ext4, /dev/sda1) and a LVM "partition" (/dev/sda2), with
the LVM "partition", broken up into a number of volumes (including /, swap,
/home, and some others).
