What happened to the consoles?

Do you mean that you're at the lightdm login screen and that you can't
switch to a VT?

Does it work after you press escape or click on the background or the panel?

Have you deleted, masked, or modified
/lib/systemd/system/getty at .service

Have you deleted or modified
/etc/systemd/logind.conf
