I have been having this same problem awhile and keep forgetting to
post about it. It started after an update last year - I was on
xubuntu 14.04 then. I'm on lubuntu 16.10 now and still no middle
mouse. Irritating.
Reading that bug is interesting. My wheel actually works, but
selecting text does not copy it and the middle mouse doesn't paste.
My mouse isn't a logitech, either. It's an off-brand (lsusb calls it
a "Pixart Imaging, Inc. Optical Mouse"
