It would be more helpful to suggest he check /var/log/apt/history log on
the 2 offending laptops and see what updates have been automatically
installed. Then you can check which updates have been automatically
installed. But I don't know if there is something like the Debian
snapshot archives. In which you can go back in time whenever you want. 

But you could check if /var/cache/apt/archives on the laptop that still
functions still has them. 

Then you can try to downgrade those packages. It should be possible to
just dpkg -i them, but I am not sure. To remove them before installing
the other one without causing ruckus: dpkg --remove --force-depends
<packagename>. 

In any case you need the older packages in order to downgrade your other
laptops. 

Of course I forget to mention: turn off automatic updates on the still
healthy laptop by editing /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/20auto-upgrades or
something similar.
