external mouse/keyboard only works after reboot

Do the LEDs on the keyboard, or the LED (laser?) in the mouse, come on?  
I'm thinking those are OS-independent, and if they don't, you probably 
have more of a hardware issue than a software one -- e.g., maybe the 
dock only polls devices at boot time.  Which sounds really stupid, but 
never say never when it comes to docking stations...
