There is a "tweaks" utility for 17.10. This sort of setting is often
put into such a utility, maybe the compose key ended up there as well.

   apt-get install gnome-tweak-tool

The Universe repository will have to be enabled.

I don't know if it will help - I don't use 17.xx - but it looks worth a
try.
