I would still say:

- pick your form factor first.

Do you want a full sized desktop, a mini dekstop with µATX motherboard,
or a small case with ITX?

After that comes motherboard.

Older generation motherboards are more likely to work without problems.

You need a µATX or ITX.

And preferably one with 4 memory slots and at least 4 SATA connections.

I suggest a core i5 7500 @ 4x 3.4 GHz 65W on socket 1151 as something to
look at.

I would recommend some ITX motherboard if you really need no expansion
cards ever.

This is the Asus Linux support list:

The H110 chipset is listed for quite a number of motherboards:

H110I-PLUS Ubuntu 15.04
H110M2 D3 14.4
H110M-A OpenSUSE 13.1
H110M-A D3 OpenSUSE 13.1 RedHat 7.0
H110M-A/DP Ubuntu 15.04
H110M-A/M.2 Ubuntu 15.10
H110M-C OpenSUSE 13.1
H110M-C D3 OpenSUSE 13.1
H110M-D OpenSUSE 13.1
H110M-D D3 OpenSUSE 13.1
H110M-E D3 OpenSUSE 13.2
H110M-E/M.2 OpenSUSE 42.1 Ubuntu 16.04
H110M-PLUS D3 OpenSUSE 13.2
H110M-R Ubuntu 15.10
H110-PLUS Fedora 23

The Intel I219V ethernet chipset works under kernel 4.4

The alternative RTL8111H should also have drivers.

If you want to go for an ITX motherboard I would personally recommend:

Asrock H110M-ITX

And it would probably work but you can ask on forums.
