Yes. I successfully booted to a laptop and another desktop and did an
installation on the other desktop with the same hard drive and USB stick.

I had already done that step too... there were no problems detected with
that USB stick.
I also tried three different USB slots on the problematic computer.

That's not quite as easy... I don't have an optical drive in that desktop.
