on a normally working system it should, yes ... dont forget that wade
actually skipped releases during the upgrade. 

it is very likely that several transition scripts and tools did not run
so the system might have ended up in a mess ... (GDM taking over vt1,
the rest of the vt start jobs cant deal with that because they still
expect the display manager to go to the first free vt instead of 1 or
something like that ...)
