what is the software supposed to do if it sends a command to flush all
data to all disks (so the initramfs upgrade can not harm your data) and
the hardware is so broken that it simply does never allow this flushing
command to return ?
the workaround is obviously in the bug that colin posted, but this is
not helping if your defective hardware hangs the returning of an
otherwise working command, especially since the supposed workaround of
the bug relies on a feature of the sync command that can only be found
in releases after 16.04.x
there is really not much the software can do here, the initamfs issue
is a result of the broken drive ...
ciao
