just try it:

sudo umount /dev/sdb1

see if that returns (typically in seconds, but if you feel safer then
give it a few minutes), if it doesnt, give up ... hope for the best (if
you have an ext4 filesystem it is likely your data wont be corrupted
(beyond the defective hardware) and just unplug it ...

then re-tun the upgrade, if you run into more issues, let us know and
we'll walk you through. in the current state of the hardware the system
will obviously never finish the upgrade.

i dont know what this "HP Launcher" is doing or supposed to do, but if
whatever it starts lives on that external disk it wouldnt work anyway
in this state of the disk.
