Okay - I have copied as much as possible, from the home partition, to a 
USB thumb drive, and, unplugged the HP external HDD, and restarted the 
software update/upgrade procedure, and, it completed okay.

Problems still show with the HP external HDD, in var/log/syslog, after 
the system reboot, with having plugged the HP HDD back in beofre the 
booting.

So, I need to replace the HP external HDD.

I still think the initramfs bug needs fixing, as I said in a previous 
post.
