Well Liam usermod result is strange:

chas at Charles-PC:~$ sudo usermod -a -G lp charles
[sudo] password for chas:
usermod: user 'charles' does not exist
chas at Charles-PC:~$ sudo usermod -a -G lp Charles
usermod: user 'Charles' does not exist
chas at Charles-PC:~$

My user name is definitely Charles in the Users settings.
What next?
