is the new stack still in use after upgrade and reboot ?
check the kernel version with:
uname -a
(it should be 4.15.xx)
and the xorg version with:
xdpyinfo |grep "X.Org version"
(this should be 1.19.6)
also, what exactly did get upgraded when you did the upgrade and were
there any package removals ?
note that the -hwe-16.04 stack is the default if you install freshly
from a recent 16.04 iso (4.4 was only used until the 16.04.1 iso
images, after the .1 releases the LTS versions typically switch to the
hwe kernel and Xorg bits on the images)
