18.04 HWE stack causes Thinkpad button problems

BTW, I traced and fixed this.
I no longer had the driver installed after the HWE update. I installed
the new version:
xserver-xorg-input-synaptics-hwe-18.04
... as the old one (xserver-xorg-input-synaptics) had problematic dependencies.
2 reboots and it worked. First reboot, I couldn't log in -- it froze.
This may be related to me experimenting with my trackpad on the login
screen... :-/
