How did you get GNOME on Xubuntu? There is history here that you are
not telling us.

Please give as much info as you can.

How did you install this machine?

So your account is good.

Things to do:

* check you own all the files in your home directory & subdirectories
* update your machine from the command line
* check what graphics driver you are running. Try some alternatives.
