Can you see any discoloration indicating corrosion or perhaps excessive wear?
I'm curious now as I have had several things go unused for a while and they
don't always work right away. In some cases, I've had hard drives that
would not seem to spin up right away  after sitting for monthgs but a few 
power cycles and they
are fine.
