you are aware how livecd's (or ubuntu live-usb images) work ? 

there is a read-only disk image and for all possible writable bits
there is a ramdisk overlay in which space gets allocated for writable
operations ... the default gnome desktop already eats quite a bunch of
the 1GB here ... plus allocated space for general system RW operation
*and* running the installer will quickly eat up the remaining bits of
memory ... 

you can not compare this to an installed system at all ...
