Instead of using a VM for a Linux guest, consider to take a look at
https://linuxcontainers.org/.
I'm not using it. IIRC Tom H., another subscriber, is a linux container
expert.
I'm using systemd-nspawn to maintain my Ubuntu install when running
Arch Linux and vice versa, by command line. This is a little bit
tricky, since some updates can not be completely finished, if running
an install in such a systemd container. Even a chroot isn't perfect
for this purpose, but a systemd container is less good than a chroot,
it's just way more pleasant to use for the majority of tasks I'm doing.
