Benefits of disabling root logins (was Re: I've lost sudo access and I don't really understand why)

Just food for thought, but the openbsd project, which pioneered sudo, once
recommended disabling root login and only using sudo, for reasons mentioned
elsewhere.

I won't go into too much detail, those interested in lessons in security
should dust off a vacationing computer that meets their recommended minimum
specs, and try it out.

I'll just note that they no longer recommend disabling root. Some of their
reasons have been referred to here.
