Oh, it would certainly in principle be possible for both to be true, but
the historical fact is that the actual decision for Ubuntu was made in
order to improve the usability of the installer.

(Sadly I can't give you a publicly-visible citation for this, because
this was in the early months of Ubuntu when we were still flying under
the radar and so most development discussion happened on Canonical's
all-staff mailing list; but I just went back to re-read the thread in
question and confirmed that my memory of why Mark specifically asked me
to make that particular change was accurate.)
