Thanks for the response.  The hplip package is already installed.  Now I know
it should work.  I removed simple-scan and removed the simple-scan directory
from ~/.cache then installed simple-scan.  Simple-scan still can not find the
scanner.

Looking at the --debug output of simple-scan I find 

[+0.01s] DEBUG: _g_io_module_get_default: Found default implementation dconf
(DConfSettingsBackend) for 'gsettings-backend'

I do not know where these settings are located or how to change them.  How do I
look at these settings and possibly change them?
