Thanks for your help.
I am not yet comfortable installing software from binaries so I will stay with
what is already installed on the laptop.
I ran scanimage -L on my laptop.
robert at MARS:~$ scanimage -L
No scanners were identified. If you were expecting something different,
check that the scanner is plugged in, turned on and detected by the
sane-find-scanner tool (if appropriate). Please read the documentation
which came with this software (README, FAQ, manpages).
robert at MARS:~$
Then I decided to run it on a desktop computer
bob1 at Juptier:~$ scanimage -L
device `hpaio:/net/hp_color_laserjet_mfp_m277dw?ip=192.168.60.153&queue=false'
is a Hewlett-Packard hp_color_laserjet_mfp_m277dw all-in-one
bob1 at Juptier:~$
I then ran sane-find-scanner. It appears to only search for USB attached
scanners as the output was the same on both computers.
So from this it does not appear, to me, to be a simple-scan problem but an
Ubumtu configuration problem.
I borrowed an HP Envy 120 MFP from my son. On the desktop computer scanimage
-L identifies both devices but my laptop can not find either of the devices.
Also on the desktop computer simple-scan finds both devices but can only scan
from the HP Envy 120. So there is a problem with simple scan and the HP M277.
For the time being I am not going to try to identify the problem with
simple-scan and the HP M277.
I do need to find out why my laptop can not find the scanners that are
connected wireless.
Now I am lost. I have no idea on how to even begin to trouble shoot this kind
of a problem.
