Do I need a swap *partition* to use hibernation?

Thanks, I found this page where there is also a size recommendation:

So I have created the swap partition (12.5 GB) and activated it.
I also followed the instructions regarding how hibernation can be done
(is at the end of the page above).
So now I have presumably configured the hibernate infrastructure but
unfortunately there is no visible way in the Mate menus to activate a
hibernation shutdown...
