Just a simple straight forward single ext4 '/' partition alongside the
Windows partition. In the past I had used a separate '/home' partition
on other computers. The cloning process prevented Linux from rebooting
so I thought that a fresh installation may solve the problem, but it didn't.

Windows is on the same SSD and that's the only reason that I cloned the
SSD in the first place. I don't have the original Windows installation
media. I need Windows for only one application and that is to keep my
Garmin navigator up to date.

There is a simple, although expensive, solution; buy another laptop. I
do need some extra RAM anyway. I'm tempted but the more modern Thankpads
don't come with DVD writers, which I probably don't really need, and
they generally have fewer USB ports than my T420.
