Unfortunately the Brother scanner packages are ... not up to the quality we
have come to expect. (I almost said "terrible," but that's probably
overstating it. They used to work as directed... maybe fourteen years ago.)
The people who made them probably manually installed the drivers while
using a recording utility to create the .deb files and then finished with
the minimal information required to package them. And they have not updated
them as the underlying operating systems have changed. The packages would
NOT pass any Debian or Ubuntu quality standards.
Search for your model of printer on the Brother web site, then find the
section on downloading and installing the linux drivers, then read through
all of the FAQ questions. Someone recently updated the information in the
FAQs about how to install the packages, which basically involves forcing
them to install and then moving the resulting files to the place SANE looks
for the drivers. (NOT fiddling with the packages to put them in the right
place the first time.)
As for fixing the problem created by your mangled package... sorry I don't
know. I gather that you stumbled upon a way to turn a poor quality package
into a terrible one... ?
But if you find the apt errors persistent, I do recommend backing up all
the data you wouldn't want to lose, and reinstalling Ubuntu. Most of the
time that can make things work correctly and you won't need the backup. The
one time you DON'T make the backup will be the time you wish you had.
Good luck.
