if it is still usable with 16.04 you could look into creating a snap
package, that then would be able to run on any release (and distros
that have snapd support) ...

also taking a look at flathub might be worth it, perhaps there
something for it exiss already ... 

keeping bitrotten software like this alive is eaxctly what snaps and
flatpk are great for ...
