Using wpa_supplicant.conf to predefine a wifi connection

QUESTION:
Is it possible that wpa_supplicant.conf if discovered during boot will
actually do what it is supposed to do?
Or must one reconfigure Ubuntu to use wpa_supplicant?
If so how?

I am working on this machine on the command line interface via PuTTY.
