I had no clue what to include in my previous email to help you out and now that you've given me questions to answer, I'll do more investigating and build a better report of my findings. I'll begin this data acquisition soon and disclose what you requested so we may begin to dissect what's going on here.

Er, OK, good! I did not think any of them were very probing questions,
but if they were helpful then great -- that was the general idea. :-)

To give some more concrete pointers (these are just general examples)...

• If you're using Firefox, try Chrome, and vice versa.
• If you're using Firefox, try with a download manager such as DownThemAll.
• If you're using Windows, run Disk Cleanup and tick all the boxes.
Run it a 2nd time & do it again for "system files"
• Then run a disk check and repair (either from the drive's properties
dialog, or run "CHKDSK /F"
• Then run Windows Update, install everything, reboot, and keep doing
that until 2 successive runs say there are no more updates. Do not
believe it the first time it says there are none.
• Try some different download mirrors
• Try some different distros, or try downloading a BSD -- assuming you
have no bandwidth caps
• If you're using a cable, try a different network cable
• If you're using wifi, try plugging into the router
• Have you tried turning it off and back on again? Computer and
router/hub/switch/firewall/whatever
