Screensaver in Xubuntu 20.04

I'm pleased to report that I have solved the problem and gone back to
xscreensaver, which works perfectly now.

Apparently the one that comes with Ubuntu does not include the GL
slideshow, but there's a xscreensaver-gl package that provides this.
Why it's separate, I don't know, I'm just glad it's there.
